Media Engine Interface Explained
Workspace: Displays all Shares (datasets) on the OWC Jellyfish and allows the user to drilldown to access the contents within the selected share. Keep in mind that based on your login credentials you may or may not have access to some shares and their content.
Drilldown: Drill down takes a deep dive into analyzing your media and caches thumbnails, metadata, and other aspects of the media file. Users should avoid drilling down large amounts of data at once because it may halt your OWC Jellyfish.
Activities: All activity is tracked in Media Engine, so either you are generating proxies, downloading those proxies, deleting proxies or exporting files from one share to another. All activities will show up in the activities section. You can access the history of past activities by selecting the see all button located to the right of Activity.
File Panel: Directories can be accessed through the workspace module. Once they are selected and a drilldown occurs the contents inside the directory folder and subfolders will be displayed in the main file panel (highlighted in red) of Media Engine.
File Panel Top Bar
The file panel's top bar consists of different ways you can search your OWC Jellyfish and see the results in varying layouts; grid view, list view, and detailed view. You can specify if you want to only see the video, images, or audio by toggling the labels on and off. Blue= on.
Specify sorting by category which can be accessed by the dropdown menu as well as by time. last hour, to last year. The search bar allows you to look for media by using keywords, tags, filename, and any other metadata. This is possible due to the direct integration between Media Engine and Kyno for OWC Jellyfish.
At the very right of the top bar, you will see your login name used to access Media Engine.
You can hover over it to get the settings and logout buttons to appear.
The setting menu gives you access to your version number of OWC Jellyfish Media Engine as well as previous updates and bug fixes. The software version number can be very helpful when reporting bugs over at jellyfish.support@owc.com.
File Panel Bottom Bar
The bottom bar will display various different things in the specific view options.
Grid view: By default, the bottom bar will show the user a thumbnail resize slider (bottom left) and a refresh button (bottom right). This is so you can refresh the directory.
Once you select a single file or more in grid view, the following buttons will appear: make proxies, download proxies, delete proxies, and export files. Next to each button you may see a number, that number is informing you on the number of files selected that proxies need to be made for, the number of proxies that are available for download, the number of proxies are available to be deleted, and the number of files that the user can export.
List View:
Provides you with a browsing experience that gives you various metadata column categories that you can view your media in as well as help you find the footage you are searching for. You can specify which categories are most important for your workflow and select those to show up for your list view browsing.
By default, all categories will be displayed in the list view.
You can access the three-dot contextual menu on the far right side of the column to select the metadata fields that are important to your workflow.
Since there is a seamless integration between Media Engine and Kyno, all metadata that can be entered in Kyno for OWC Jellyfish will be available to search in Media Engine. So if your workflow is heavy with tags and ratings you might want to add those columns to your list view for easy browsing and search.
In the example above, the “sort by” field is set to tags and the search bar is searching the term “ National”, the metadata columns are slimmed down from all to just the ones the user is focusing on. The results, any clip that has been tagged with the word “national” doesn’t matter if its uppercase or lowercase it will show up in your Media Engine search.

Detailed View:
Allows the user to view the web proxy of the file if there is one present as well as a full detailed list of metadata that’s associated with the media file. The user can add to the metadata fields and the entered values will be reflected in Kyno for OWC Jellyfish.
If you select a clip that does not have a proxy file associated with it and you select “detailed view” you will get a prompt that asks you to create an HTML viewable proxy in the following formats, 540p, 720p, 1080p.
Once you have your proxy made you can play it back in the detailed view, scroll through the media file by dragging the playhead, or go full screen.
Once in fullscreen mode, you can activate the picture in picture or download the proxy file directly from the fullscreen menu bar at the bottom far right menu.
Picture in Picture:
Picture in picture can be used to cross-reference clips within Media Engine. You can activate picture in picture which will allow your player to become a floating window. Using your cursor you can drag and place it anywhere within the Media Engine web interface. This will allow you to go back to grid view or list view to compare it to other shots.
At any time that you wish to get rid of the picture-in-picture you can click the “x” at the top right of the loaded clip.
